The cost consciousness that we are experiencing worldwide has extended to the top fashion designers as their collections for 2009/2010 reveal minor changes in trends. This is good news as you don't have to buy an entire new wardrobe for summer. The key is to build on what you have and invest in key pieces that have longevity while ensuring that your look is current.

If you are buying a key item, we recommend the following:

Ladies:

  1. The cropped cut is making way for longer jackets, so invest in a well-cut jacket that can go from day to night. Navy is making comeback too and a great alternative to black or grey.
  2. A top with accentuated shoulders is another must-have that gives you an instant small waist. Just make sure that it is reminiscent of the 40's style and not over the over-the-top 80's.
  3. Invest in a shift-dress, it is highly fashionable and can be worn almost anywhere.
  4. Buy one really big shorter striking necklace to replace last season's delicate beads, it turns any outfit into an instant statement.
  5. This season's fashion pants are tailored and slightly cropped on the ankle, longer than Capri, stylish and flexible.
  6. Liven up your neutral outfits with colourful shoes, orange and purple are amongst the popular colours this season.

Men:

  1. As you know, shoes make the greatest impact on your outfit, while you may be cutting costs or trading down your brands in others areas, don't compromise on your shoes.
  2. Your suit is still your most essential item. Prioritise cut and shape over brand, there are many great cuts and styles out there that wont cost you a fortune.
  3. Invest in a double-cuffed shirt, it can be equally smart as wearing a tie.
