The Tower Group is a professional Black Empowered enterprise with a national infrastructure and six specialist divisions. Each division is headed by a specialist recruiter with substantial industry experience ensuring that only the best talent is selected for our clients.

BEE & CORPORATE SOCIAL INVESTMENT

During 2004 the Tower Group sold 26% (twenty six percent) of its beneficial equity to our current black partners. Tower is thus a black empowered company with a level 3 Empowerdex rating.

In addition to being a black empowered company with a positive transformation track record, we are also a highly engendered company with 80% of our middle management being female. All of this is supported by a dynamic Tower Group team of which more than 65% are black.

The Tower Group BEE strategy is therefore multi-dimensional and focuses not only on one aspect of BEE but all levels of the company hierarchy.

Corporate Social Investment
The Tower Group has a long history of Corporate Social Investment which stretches back many years. An important part of our corporate social investment programme included support of the Khulisa Crime Prevention Initiative. This programmes aims to rehabilitate youthful ex offenders. Tower’s ultimate goal is to re-integrate these young people into their communities and to assist them to obtain formal employment thus reducing the likelihood of recidivism.

Tower spends approximately R150 000 per annum on our very important corporate social initiatives and shows our long-term commitment to reducing crime and investing in uplifting poorer and often neglected communities. We try to focus our support on communities who most need it and do not have access to other funding sources.

We further participate in Enterprise Development and annually spend a significant percentage of our after tax profits on developing small black-owned businesses.

SOURCING, VERIFICATION & CANDIDATE CHECKING

Candidate Sourcing
It is a well-known fact that the current recruitment market has a shortage of good candidates. Most industries, companies and sectors find it increasingly difficult to fill their positions and this is a situation that seems to become more acute each year.

For this reason Tower does not rely only on the traditional methods of sourcing candidates. By using technology and a tried and tested business model we are in a position to find candidates, even in candidate short markets. It is important for us to know where candidates may be sourced. We therefore make it a priority to research the various markets to ensure that we are in a position to attract suitable candidates.

Our methods of sourcing talent include:

  • Traditional print media advertisements in National & Regional newspapers as well as professional journals.
  • Internet job sites including Career Junction, Careers 24, P-Net and Tower’s own web site.
  • Social Networking sites such as LinkedIn / Facebook
  • Membership of professional bodies. Attendance at functions held by these organisations brings us into contact with many talented people as well as enhancing our knowledge of industry trends. Our memberships include:

  • Employment of Researchers: It is Tower’s practice to employ Research staff to assist with the sourcing of candidates. In this way Tower is able to identify where certain highly skilled staff are employed. This information is recorded in real-time on our electronic database for use in Talent Hunting, Headhunting or Executive Search.

This knowledge base is available to our consultants wherever we operate so that we are able to capitalise on the highly mobile candidate so prevalent in the modern workplace.

Candidate Selection & Screening
For us to successfully conclude a client vacancy assignment we have to be able to submit the calibre of candidate demanded by our clients. Good candidate screening practices are therefore a vital part of the Tower Group operations.

Our consultants focus on the candidate’s suitability for a specific vacancy assigned to us. A detailed job specification is obtained from our client at the outset to ensure that we cover all the dimensions required for that specific vacancy.

Suitability for a specific position is dependent on the skills and experience of a particular candidate. We use both competency based and targeted selection interviewing methods to ensure that we gain a balanced appraisal of a candidate’s specific capabilities. At Tower, we recognise the inherent dangers of poor candidate screening. We are also aware of the requirements of prevailing labour legislation. Proficient candidate screening is taken very seriously and that is why we suggest that each client provides us with their minimum screening requirements. Checks that Tower can perform to aid in the screening process include:

A combination of the above checks is conducted depending upon the job content and client requirements. We always adhere to the requirements of labour legislation when conducting tests.
