The South African Forestry Company Limited (SAFCOL) is mandated by the South African Government to ensure the sustainable management of forests and other assets within the SAFCOL Group, to enhance the value of the SAFCOL Group and play a catalytic role in the realisation of the State’s afforestation, rural development and economic transformation goals. SAFCOL is dedicated to growing its business in the plantation forestry and forest products value chain(s) and maximising stakeholder value. The organisation seeks to recruit a Chief Risk Officer who will be reporting administratively to the Chief Executive Officer and functionally to the Board and designated risk subcommittee.

Role/responsibilities: To facilitate the execution of risk management processes and infrastructure as a key enabler to achieving the business objectives of the organisation: * Assist the board and senior management to establish and communicate the organisation’s ERM objectives and direction * Assist management with integrating risk management with the strategy development process * Assist the CEO and the Executive Committee to develop and communicate risk management policies, risk appetite and risk limits * Drive the development of risk mitigation strategies for the organisation’s critical risks and for monitoring these risks * Establish, communicate and facilitate the use of appropriate ERM methodologies, tools and techniques * Work with business units to establish, maintain and continuously improve risk management capabilities * Facilitate enterprise-wide risk assessments and monitor priority risks across the organisation * Implement appropriate risk reporting to the CEO, Executive Committee, board and senior management * Ensure effective alignment between the ERM process and internal audit and risk financing * Conduct risk management education and training from time to time * Provide an independent view regarding risks relating to proposed business plans and transactions * Develop project risk management capabilities and implement an IT strategy to support ERM

Requirements/competencies: 2 A relevant academic qualification 2 Six years of business experience in medium and large companies * Experience in risk management, industry (added advantage) and reporting to the board * Professional membership – The Institute of Risk Management South Africa or other similar organisation * A sound understanding of ERM principles and philosophy * Critical thinking skills – strategic thinking, effective analysis of data and the ability to disaggregate business plans into component risks * A team player with excellent communication (verbal and written) and facilitation skills * Keen business acumen – business and financial judgment and problem-solving skills * Strong process orientation * Assertive * Ability to work with all levels of management and across business units * A proven track record on the above competencies.
