Job Details
Large distributor of Home appliances is seeking a young and energetic individual to join their south distribution site. Extensive international travel on the cards.
A vacancy exists for a skilled Appliance Technician to work in the QA Department of a large National Distributor of Home Appliances
TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:
- Advanced troubleshooting and repair of small appliances including both electrical and gas products.
- Knowledge of small appliances used in the average home, i.e. Kettles, Steam Irons, Vacuum Cleaners, Ice Machines, Gas and Electric Hotplates, Microwave and Mini Ovens, Steamers, Convection Ovens, Air Conditioners, etc.
- Ability to demonstrate proper safe use of equipment to others.
- Knowledge to operate all types of appliances and home equipment.
- Read and understand Safety Regulations.
- Ability to prioritise tasks
- Advanced mechanical and electrical / electronic skills and ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics and manuals.
- Knowledge of refrigeration preferred.
- Knowledge of 220/240 volt, AC circuit and advanced troubleshooting skills preferred.
- Critical thinking and problem solving skills.
- Ability to understand and follow SABS / NRCS compulsory safety specifications and policies.
- Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with all people including those from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.
- Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilise appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE:
- Operating knowledge of and experience with Personal Computers
- Keyboard and computer software skills (including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook etc).
- Operating knowledge of and experience with typical office equipment, such as telephones, copier, fax machine, E-mail, etc.
- Operating knowledge of basic hand tools and other specialised test and measurement tools.
- Operating knowledge of digital meters, probes, digital thermometers and power measuring equipment preferred.
EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:
- Matric preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years experience in appliance repairs.
- Exposure to electronic control of appliances
REPORT WRITING AND COMMUNICATION:
- Above average ability in written and spoken English essential.
- Ability to effectively communicate technical problems to overseas suppliers whose understanding of English is limited
- Ability to maintain accurate records essential
- Ability to write concise and accurate technical reports essential
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS & DIRECTION/GUIDANCE:
- Day to day reporting to the National Service manager
- For technical matters working closely and reporting to an independent consulting engineer who will provide guidance and direction
DAY TO DAY DUTIES:
- Disassemble all type of small electrical and gas home appliance
- Examine individual components and determine if they are appropriate for the working conditions of the appliance
- Reassemble the appliance into a working state
- Test the appliance for functionality and safety
- Decide whether the candidate product would enhance the current product range (essential guidance in this area will be given)
- Confirmation by examination that products from individual shipments comply with requirements for packaging, safety and performance.
- Present the results of the above investigations in a clear and concise manner (reporting guidelines and templates will be given)

GENERAL:
The successful candidate must be a ‘self starter’, be able to work in isolation and also in cooperation with general repair men/women and technicians, must seek guidance when necessary but also think “out of the box” to provide solutions to problems. Good analytical skills are an absolute necessity as failure modes of equipment must be predicted for new products and determined for existing products. A working knowledge of National Safety Regulations as applied to small electrical and gas appliances would be a distinct advantage.
