CREDIT ANALYST - FiCC

JOB DESCRIPTION & REQUIREMENTS

Critical functions:

The Bank's Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities (FICC) division, one of South Africa's largest treasury operations, trades billions of rands on the global money and capital markets every day and serves a wide range of clients.

The Credit Analyst will report to the Head of FiCC Credit.

 The main responsibilities of the successful candidate will include:

 Assess counterparty credit risk, which includes the following:

  • o Assessment or understanding of the operating environment (i.e. country, industry, regulatory and legal risk) and how it impacts on the risk profile of the counterparty.
  • o Spreading and modeling of financial statements.
  • o Analyze and interpret financial statements.
  • o Quantitative and qualitative assessment to identify and quantify the financial and business risks of the counterparty.
  • Assess financial transactions, which include an assessment of products (i.e. derivatives) and structures used.
  • Assign credit ratings to counterparties by using internally approved rating methodologies and models.
  • Write credit reports and prepare credit applications and financial models to be presented to the relevant committees.
  • Present credit applications and reports to various credit committees, forums and to the Board of Directors.
  • Monitor financial covenants and financial risks for credit reporting.
  • Ongoing evaluation and monitoring of counterparties and facilities.
  • Ongoing monitoring and management of portfolio, which include making recommendations and/or providing input to further develop the Bank's lending policy.
  • Liaise with various business units, divisions and subsidiaries within the Banking Group.
  • Interact with clients.

 Qualification and Experience

 The ideal candidate must have a B Com (Hons) / CFA. The successful candidate must have at least two years credit analysis experience, preferably within a large financial institution or three years experience in financial markets in a consulting/auditing capacity.  Modeling, assessing or advising on financial and business risks should form part of this experience.  A sound understanding of Treasury products (i.e. derivatives) is required.

  • Interpersonal skills and proactive attitude
  • Computer literacy: proficiency in spreadsheet, database and the word processing software
  • General knowledge and understanding of business, industry and the macroeconomic environment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Companies Act, Commercial Law, legal issues relating to security, exchange control and other relevant legislation or regulatory requirements, including Basle II.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the taxation of companies, financial institutions and shareholders.
  • Good understanding of financial instruments, products (i.e. derivatives) and markets.
  • Ability to quickly gain proficiency in the following areas:

o Develop an in depth knowledge of specific operating environments (i.e. country, industry, regulatory and legal risk) and how it could impact on the risk profile of the counterparty and specific transactions.

o Develop an in depth knowledge of specific sectors and clients as part of a specific industry research team.

o Assessing financial transactions, which include derivatives and other product structures in order to identify

o Credit and other risks pertaining to vanilla and exotic derivative structures.

o Identifying transaction specific risks including credit, taxation, accounting, legal and exchange control pertaining to transactions.

o Assessing counterparty credit risk.

o Introducing risk mitigating measures as input to transactions in line with the risk philosophy of the Bank.

o A good understanding of the Bank's credit risk appetite, credit grading and credit pricing models.

o A general understanding of trends in the global lending market with a view to providing input into the bank wide lending policy development process.

o A good understanding of credit ratings, portfolio theory and credit pricing.

  • Excellent communication skills (i.e. verbal, writing and presentation skills).
  • Ability to work with a team and/or independently.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure.

The successful candidate must have strong interpersonal skills with the ability to explain and debate technical and complex issues. S/he must be able to work as part of a highly innovative and competitive team, in a pressurised environment that sometimes requires overtime. Furthermore, the candidate must be prepared to meet tight deadlines, maintain the highest degree of professionalism and have a strong sense of business acumen.
