The Southern African Confederation of Agricultural Unions (SACAU)
is a regional membership-based organization representing the common interests of farmers in southern Africa. Its Secretariat is based in Centurion, Pretoria, South Africa. In order to effectively discharge its mandate in the areas of policy advocacy on regional, continental and global matters, strengthening of farmers’ organizations and the provision of agricultural information, the organization is seeking to recruit candidates from the SADC region for vacancies described below for its Secretariat.

ANALYST: ECONOMICS AND POLICY

Reporting to the CEO, he/she will be responsible for developing and executing the policy programme of the organization, working in conjunction with operations staff and management. Key duties include: spearheading the development and implementation of the organization’s policy agenda (including preparation of position papers, conference papers, policy briefs etc) and advocacy; undertaking regular analysis of macro-economic environments in relation to agricultural development; facilitating the development and communication of the organization’s policy positions; monitoring, analysing implications of key policy developments at regional and global levels and keeping members regularly informed about this; developing partnerships with reputable agri-related policy institutions; providing direct inputs, and coordinating members’ inputs into regional and global policy processes; providing advice and backstopping support to members; manage policy research projects; representing the organization at policy fora; participating in M&E of the activities of the organization and
discerning policy messages; preparation of research proposals and internal reports, and providing backstopping support to members.

Qualifications and experience: At least a post graduate degree in agricultural economics, economics or related fields; at least 5 years relevant practical experience, particularly in economic or policy analysis/research; policy advocacy; M&E; familiarity with regional and global agricultural policy developments; exceptional communication and presentational skills (oral and written) in English and good interpersonal skills. Knowledge of French will be an added advantage.

All the above posts are offered on a 3-year contract and a remuneration package which is dependent on qualifications and experience. The application should provide 3 contactable references.
